Michelia alba, is an evergreen tree, grown in Java, China, India. It was also cultivated in Taiwan. To our knowledge, there is no information about the constituents of the leaves and the stems of this species. In continuation of a program toward the studies of chemotaxonomy and biologically active metabolites from Magnoliaceae plants, a MeOH extract of the leaves of M. alba has afforded one new chlorophyll, michephyll A (36); and 28 known compounds, including seven aporphines: [(-)-anonaine (1), (-)-norushinsunine (2), (-)-ushinsunine (3), (-)-N-formylanonaine (4), (-)-N-acetylanonaine (5), (-)-oliveroline (6), (+)-nornuciferine (7)]; three oxoaporphines: [lysicamine (10), liriodenine (11), oxoxylopine (12)]; four sesquiterpenes: [michelenolide (13), costunolide (14), 11,13-dehydrolanuginolide (15), (+)-cyperone (16)]; two lignan: [(+)-syringaresinol (17), (+)-epi-yangambin (18)]; one amide: [N-trans-feruloyltyramine (19)]; three benzenoids: [p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (20), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (21), methylparabene (22)]; one triterpenoid: [ficaprenol-10 (28)]; two steroids: [b-sitosterol (29), stigmasterol (30)]; three aliphatic compounds: [palmitic acid (31), stearic acid (32), linoleic acid (33)], two chlorophylls: [pheophytin-a (34) and aristophyll-C (35)], and a MeOH extract of the stems of M. alba has afforded 19 known compounds, including six aporphines: [(-)-anonaine (1), (-)-norushinsunine (2), (-)-ushinsunine (3), (-)-N-formylanonaine (4), (-)-roemerine (8), (-)-asimilobine (9)]; two oxoaporphines: [liriodenine (11), oxoxylopine (12)]; one lignan: [(+)-syringaresinol (17)]; one amide: [N-trans-feruloyltyramine (19)]; six benzenoids: [p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (20), p-anisaldehyde (23), veratraldehyde (24), 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid (25), 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid (26), eugenol (27)]; one triterpenoid: [ficaprenol-10 (28)]; two steroids: [b-sitosterol (29) and stigmasterol (30)] were isolated from the leaves and the stems of M. alba. The structures of these compounds were identified by spectral data interpretation. Among them, 36 is a novel furanone and 1 is the major constituent. All compounds, except 3, 11, 14 and 15, are found for the first time from this plant. (-)-Anonaine (1) showed cytotoxicities against HeLa cells. |
